My wife had started an endeavor with a company that gave her an affiliate link. I had the idea to create a page on our family’s website that she could use to explain why she joined and how people could find her shop. Great idea, right? Of course it was. If only I hadn’t hit a road block setting it up.
While DNS is awesome for getting around the internet, it is limited to some rules and regulations. These rules help allow for an easier navigable internet as well as a standard that all hosting solutions can follow. To get around the rigidity of DNS and use shorter, more customized links you can choose to follow a couple of paths. If you are well versed in code, feel free to write your own redirect, and if that is the case then why are you here? If you are like me, and not as strong of a coder, you can use the tools you already have.
This article is for users hosting their site on BlueHost and running on WordPress. Figure out what you want as your custom link and create a subdomain.
- Login to BlueHost and choose ‘Domains’ from the menu on the left.
2. Create your subdomain, we chose booknook and added it to the domain loscarters.com. Be sure to select the domain you want to create it for as a different domain may be selected by default.
3. Click on ‘Redirect’ from the previously mentioned link on the left side of the page. You will see a drop-down menu where you can choose the subdomain you recently created and state the page you would like it to redirect to.
4. If you completed this correct you should see your newly created redirect at the bottom of the page.
We have now created trendy, compact subdomain in booknook.loscarters.com and pointed it to www.loscarters.com/why-i-chose-usborne-books-more
